The game was previously released for the PS4 in Japan in September 2018. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 4 takes place shortly after the end of the third game. The heroes of Class 7 are fighting against the full force of the Empire. The heroes must stop the Empire's path of total domination. In the chaos, the hero of Erebonian Civil War and Class 7's instructor, Rean Schwarzer, is nowhere to be found. Students from Class 7, which consists of new and previous characters from the series, must work with other heroes on the continent to fight the Empire and find Rean. Players can either purchase the standard edition or the Digital Deluxe Edition. The upgraded version comes with a costume bundle with outfits from the third game, swimsuit bundle, magical girl bundle, or the standard costume bundle. These costumes can be claimed from the DLC tab on the item page, then equipped from the Camp Menu's costume page. The PlayStation version is a single-player game that can be played offline. It uses the vibration function of the Dualshock 4 controller or using a PS Vita. In total, the Digital Deluxe Edition comes with the full game and four bundles, which amounts to over 70 pieces of DLC cosmetic content. PlayStation Plus members can purchase the Digital Deluxe Edition at a discounted price.
