Group B during the draw-in stage after the Play-Ins looked like a Group of Life by a lot of fans, players and casters in the community, with many of them expecting one of the tournament favorites Fun-Plus Phoenix, China 1st seed and Splyce, Europe 3rd seed to be the ones to get out of the group.

Standings after first round-robin:

During the first round-robin, J-Team, Taiwan 1st seed had surprised many players and have managed to win against one of the favorites to win the tournament, Fun-Plus Phoenix, who have dominated their regular LPL season in China. It was a huge upset during the first day of worlds to see one of the tournaments favorite to be taken down by a minor region team, from whom no one had any expectations.

Splyce, on the other hand, has disappointed many fans and the community expected J-Team to be the one to be getting out of groups alongside Fun-Plus Phoenix after the results from the previous days. For them to get out of groups, they needed a miracle run, to win all matches for the second round-robin or win most of them and rely on the Fun-Plus Phoenix & J-Team to lose their games to Gigabyte Marines.

There is a meme around the community regarding the Week 2 EU ‘buff’ and it happened again, Splyce won 3 matches going from 1-2 to 4-2, securing a spot in the quarterfinals. At the same time, Fun-Plus Phoenix barely managed to scrape a win against J-Team and get the second spot for quarterfinals. At the end of the day, a tiebreaker for the 1st seed and 2nd seed going into quarterfinals was played between Fun-Plus Phoenix and Splyce, with Fun-Plus Phoenix coming out in a non-dominating fashion.

Millions of Pick’ems ( n event by Riot Games, where you can predict how the teams will place in the group and win a Summoner Icon) were saved with the miracle matches from Splyce, showing again that the European Region adapts quite fast for Week 2 of World Championship, as per tradition.

While the community was pleasantly surprised that EU 3rd seed managed to get out of groups after a shaky start, they were disappointed at the performance of Fun-Plus Phoenix, many put them in high regard and as a contender to win the World Championship, but after their group run, they are clearly seen as a much weaker team compared to the one the opponents expected to see.
