The fantastic role-playing video game Persona 5 Royal is finally available for purchase on the Nintendo Switch and Xbox One Series X consoles, and it’s just as enjoyable as it was when it was introduced to the market in early 2019. However, even while it is, for the most part, the same game as before, it appears that the new-generation edition of the game includes one extremely significant piece of data that has caused a particular group of Persona fans to be divided for a considerable amount of time: Joker’s real name.

The Persona 5 subreddit was alerted to an issue identified by user _yourfriendjase. If a player selects a name at the start of the game and then changes to a different language choice, the game will assign the name Ren Amamiya. It will also change the player’s team name to “The Phantoms” as the default and will not alter the nickname back until the player returns to the language option they had previously used.

If you’re curious why this is a big deal, the identity of Joker’s true identity has been a point of contention among Persona fans. The fact that Persona 5 forces players to choose their name for Joker is the primary source of the controversy, even though previous games in the series have alluded to him by one of two alternative names depending on the medium in which he was depicted.
