The Digimon franchise has seen a number of video games over the past few years, but there has been very little representation on mobile devices. That’s all about to change, as the popular Japanese Digimon game, Digimon ReArise, has finally launched here in the North America, and so far, the game has been incredibly well-received.

If you are at all familiar with “gacha” games, you’ll be right at home in Digimon ReArise. For those of you who are unfamiliar with gacha mechanics, the game revolves around collecting resources in order to unlock new Digimon for your team, with unlocks being completely random.

Digimon come in different varieties and ranks, allowing you to “digivolve” them to higher levels depending on their rank. Common digital monsters can go up to Ultimate, gold monsters are special Champions, and rainbow monsters can digivolve as high as Mega, which is the best rank in the game.

As you collect new monsters and add them to your team, you then spend time with them in the virtual world. While they roam a digital park, you can interact with all of them through various activities, such as training them to build up their stats, feeding them, and also giving them presents in order to increase your bond. Every action you take will further your Digimon’s growth, leveling them up over time and allowing them to reach new forms.

All of the leveling and stat-building mechanics are put to the test in real-time battles as you progress through the game’s lengthy story. Not only will you be facing off against the AI, you can also partake in PvP battles through the Battle Park, or even join forces with other trainers in huge boss-like events called Clash Battles. As with most games in the Digimon franchise, every creature has their own strengths and weaknesses, and building the right combination of Digimon on your team is key to victory.

The game also features a “Digiwalk” mode, which is basically a call-back to the original Tamagotchi-like Digimon devices, allowing you to choose one of your digital monsters and take them on a walk. As you’re out-and-about, if you happen to walk by other people that have the feature set up on their phones, you’ll be able to special items and even other Digimon.

Digimon ReArise even let’s you add a widget on your phone to keep tabs on your little digital friend, complete with a neat little sprite version of the creature.

If you’re interesting in checking out the game for yourself, Digimon ReArise is available on both iOS and Android devices right now. While the game is free-to-play, there are still some of the expected microtransactions when it comes to purchasing rubies and other items to help your Digimon level up.
