EA announced today that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Respawn‘s 2019 hit title, will receive a free next-generation upgrade for the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.

If you’ve got auto-update on, you’ve probably already started downloading the new title update. It’s already live. Here’s a rundown of the console-specific upgrades for each platform.

As a quick overview, this next-generation upgrade boosts framerates on both the Xbox Series XS and the PlayStation 5 (more on this in a second), and improved resolution ranges for the game on both platforms. Post-processing resolution is also included, although not for the Xbox Series S.

Both the Xbox Series X and Series S see a boost of framerate up from a locked 45 to a steady 60 FPS, which seems to be the benchmark value for these early next-gen updates and performance upgrades.

On Xbox Series X you will be able to play in 1440p when the machine is set to Performance mode. In normal mode, post-processing goes up to 4k resolution.

PlayStation has similar stats. Framerate is up to 60 from 45, and post-processing is increased to 1440p. The dynamic resolution is a little lower on PlayStation, hovering around the 1200p mark.

What does this all mean? It means Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will run more smoothly on next-generation consoles, but isn’t exactly the sort of groundbreaking performance expected from the machines.

Fallen Order isn’t the best-optimized game on the market – neither on a console nor on a PC. This next-gen upgrade isn’t much of an optimization, but at least boosts the framerate of the game on each console.

Respawn’s Fallen Order was the first game the studio designed in UE4 and despite its sudden jerkiness on occasion, it was critically-acclaimed on launch and since has received very positive player reviews.

A game designed for Star Wars fans, Fallen Order appeals to a much wider audience as well. If you enjoy story-driven third-person action-adventure games, this is exactly that.

Currently available on Xbox Game Pass, this might be a good time to jump in and pick up the game on Xbox if you haven’t. Should you wait for a sale on PS5? Maybe, yes, the game was down to about 20 dollars before the holiday period.
