Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin was developed by Edelweiss and published by XSEED Games. The Japanese mythology-inspired title stars Sakuna, a spoiled harvest goddess who was banished from her celestial home. Now a resident on Hinoe Island, which is now filled with demons, she has to rediscover her birthright as a daughter of a warrior god and harvest goddess.

Sakuna works with her guardian Tama and a group of outcast humans to take the island back from the demons but also tame the soil. She can weather the elements, fight monsters, plus cultivate rice, which is the source of her power.

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin combines side-scrolling action gameplay along with crafting and rice cultivation. As a harvest goddess, Sakuna’s strength depends on each rice crop. Attributes for each crop, such as aesthetic and flavor, all directly correlate to her combat abilities. Sakuna uses farm tools as weapons. Players can chain heavy, quick, and special attacks to fight while using “Divine Raiment” to grapple distant platforms, evade obstacles, and battle monsters.

Meanwhile, Sakuna’s human friends can help her in unique ways. They can make weapons, armor, and meals using the materials Sakuna brings back from her journeys. If she completes requests for them, they will have more options to benefit the harvest goddess.

XSEED released two versions of the game. The standard edition was launched in both digital and physical form. The Digital Deluxe edition comes with several bonus items. They include a 42-track soundtrack plus a digital art book filled with character illustrations, background art, and more. The bonus content is also available in Japanese and English. Players will have to download the content from Steam and then open the files on their PC.

Kenji Hosoi, Executive Vice President at XSEED Games, stated:

We’ve known that Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin was a special game and would have broad appeal since our first meeting with Edelweiss. The game has been in development for many years, and we’re beyond excited at the reception it has received globally from critics and consumers alike. Thank you to everyone who has accompanied Sakuna and her companions on their journey!
