The Sinking City is Frogwares’ Lovecraftian private investigator game. It came out in June of 2019, but mysteriously vanished from storefronts back in August of this year. Needless to say, fans were not too happy to find this atmospheric game nowhere to be found digitally.
Its shocking department was due to a public dispute between Frogwares and publisher Nacon. It’s always unfortunate when developers and publishers don’t get along. Feuds can spill out into the public and get nasty pretty quickly.
According to Frogwares, they were upset with how Nacon decided to market The Sinking City as well as some royalty disputes. Many were upset with the game’s removal, but there is some good news today. It’s finally back on storefronts for Microsoft and Steam, with the PlayStation Store coming at a later date.
So if you haven’t been able to check it out digitally, now you can. However, it still looks like the dispute has yet to be settled legally. The publisher Nacon made a statement just recently, basically reporting what legal actions they’re currently dealing with.
The gist is Frogwares having to continue their licensing agreement until further notice. Until a decision is ultimately made, Nacon has decided to put The Sinking City back up on storefronts as they don’t want to hold gamers hostage while these disputes get resolved.
When that is remains to be seen, but it’s good to see The Sinking City back available to play and purchase. It has a lot of great atmosphere that makes you appreciate the Lovecraftian direction Frogwares took this game in.
The game focuses on a private investigator during the 1920s, set in the East Coast of the United States. The city of Oakmont — half-submerged underwater — is dealing with some supernatural forces that the private investigator will look further into. The deeper he goes, the more dark secrets he unravels.
Is he going mad or are these creatures actually affecting the very laws of reality? Frogwares keeps you in suspense as you go through exploring and finding clues to crack different mysteries.
Considering that this game has been taken off of storefronts before, now might be a good time to claim your copy before it’s possibly taken down again. Anything is possible at this point, but hopefully, both Frogwares and Nacon can work something out. That would be a good ending to a pretty bumpy relationship between both over these last couple of months.
