World of Warcraft‘s story has been filled with more than a few twists throughout its runtime, sometimes pleasing players and sometimes causing more than a few upsets. In a recent interview with VG247, two Blizzard developers gave a hint on a new twist.

Assistant Lead Quest Designer Johnny Cash and Art Director Ely Cannon sat down for an interview, discussing quite a hefty amount about the future of World of Warcraft: Shadowlands. While plenty was said during the interview, we’ll be discussing the comments on the Jailer here.

That said, if in case it wasn’t obvious, there are spoilers ahead! If you want to avoid seeing story spoilers, turn away now!

All of the lead up to the expansion has led to players thinking Zovaal, the Jailer, would be the ultimate end boss for the raiding content. The ancient evil rules over the Maw, and with the way things have gone, it’s hard to believe there are any characters on the table that could pose more of a threat.

Responding to a question, the two seemed to hint that there could be someone else for the players to combat as the final boss of the raid. Cash specifically had the following to say:

“The Jailer is absolutely one of the primary antagonists of the expansion. He is a significant person we’re going to have to deal with at some point, right. But as far as how that story all comes together, who’s X boss in Y raid, that’s something I don’t want to spoil because I think all the fun is getting there.”

Cash went on to say that the team makes decisions based on how things evolve as a direct response to VG247 asking if he was “not necessarily the last raid boss of the expansion.”

So, with such a thing now dropped in the wild, who should players expect to see if not the ancient, mighty Lord of the Maw? There’s a good chance we haven’t met whoever the developers may replace him with, if such a thing happens.

Smart money might be on Sylvanas Windrunner; it wouldn’t be too surprising for the expansion to finish with a surprise twist of Sylvanas killing the Jailer only to take his place, or to usurp his power through some other means.

It’s impossible for us to say so early, but knowing that such a thing is on the table is certainly interesting. Whatever the developers have in mind will soon become easier to see with the expansion’s approaching release on November 23rd.
