When you talk about PlayStation, one of the first titles you’ll picture is undoubtedly God of War. This was true dating all the way back to the PlayStation 2 console.
Now, three generations later, we’re still talking about God of War.
2018’s God of War was a smash hit for the successful console, and gamers have been clamoring for information on a sequel title since witnessing the game’s final cutscene.
Unfortunately, neither Sony nor developer Santa Monica Studios have made any kind of announcement as to the future of Kratos.
That hasn’t stopped God of War director Cory Barlog from discussing the franchise’s future. Recently, while being interviewed in Animal Crossing on Twitch (because why not?), Barlog talked a bit about the advancements coming for the PlayStation 5 and the new possibilities it presents for the future of God of War.
“For me, the SSD is amazing,” Barlog said through his Animal Crossing avatar. “I’m impatient and I don’t like any kind of load times. “So, we’ve gone through great lengths in this series – all the way back to the PS2 – of trying to hide any kind of loading. So you never really feel like you’re having that artificial layer of the game break you out of it. We let the menus do that, and the upgrading and stuff. There’s some really cool stuff I think we’re gonna be able to do.”
He noted that there’s a melancholy feeling that a developer feels when crossing from one console generation to the next, due to the feeling of starting over from scratch. The playbook of tricks one learns to push more speed and power out of the older console don’t exist on the new platform.
“I do think that we’re gonna have a lot of interesting surprises from different studios,” he went on to say. “Even games that you’re like, ‘Oh, I’m familiar with what they’re doing,’ it’s gonna be a lot of interesting stuff that I think people are gonna start trying. It might be a couple of years before we start to really see the true magic that I think people are gonna be able to accomplish with this hardware. So it will be super exciting.”
When Sony announced the PlayStation 5, many believed a God of War sequel would be announced alongside it. Unfortunately, the announcement came and went with no God of War title revealed.
It is the gaming world’s worst kept secret that this game is under development, so it’s just a matter of time before we get some information on the future of God of War on the PlayStation 5.
