While this has been rumored for a long time now, we have no official word from BioWare or its parent company EA regarding the existence of this title, let alone a release date.
However, rumors continue to persist that not only is this title coming, it could be set to arrive before the end of the year.
A new retail leak recently discovered on Twitter alleges that it could be coming a lot sooner than anyone thinks, dropping on September 29, 2020. The tweet in question shows what appears to be a retail release schedule with the Mass Effect remaster on there.
This news would be keeping with recent rumors that EA would be announcing the game sometime in the next few weeks and that a release would follow just a few weeks later.
The game is said to be a complete remaster of all three original games, including Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3. We could expect new visuals, some gameplay improvements, and a slew of other new features as one of the most classic sci fi RPG franchises of all time gets a facelift for the current console generation.
If this release date is indeed true, that would put the remastered edition on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles, rather than the upcoming PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X hardware, which are slated for a holiday 2020 release.
However, it should also be noted that while the remastered Mass Effect trilogy could drop on these older consoles, they would still be playable on the next generation devices.
Xbox Series X is fully backwards compatible, dating back to the original Xbox and the PlayStation 5 will allow players to play certain PlayStation 4 titles.
Mass Effect changed the course of modern RPGs, expanding on BioWare’s original formula for Star Wars Knights of The Old Republic and Jade Empire, where personal choices mattered as it pertained to the game’s outcome.
Players could not only decide the gender and appearance of Commander Shepard, they could also dictate the characters choices. Were they tolerant of aliens? Did they hate aliens? Were they a good soldier? Or did they believe in victory no matter the cost?
These choices would then carry over into the next game in the series. Your saved game from Mass Effect could be loaded into Mass Effect 2, so that all of your choices would be reflected in the sequel. Those choices were then carried over into Mass Effect 3 for the trilogy’s finale.
