CD Projekt Red sure has had a hell of a week. Unless you’ve been living off the grid in a cave (which might be preferable considering how 2020 has played out), you’re well aware of the multitude of problems plaguing Cyberpunk 2077.

The game is a hot mess on last-gen consoles. Even worse, the developers deliberately hid that fact, showcasing the game on next-gen consoles and PC. It was a bait-and-switch and CD Projekt Red has been under intense scrutiny for it. Well, it looks like Sony is just as fed up as the fans, and they’ve pulled the game from the PlayStation store. Yikes.

“SIE strives to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction, therefore we will begin to offer a full refund for all gamers who have purchased Cyberpunk 2077 via PlayStation Store. SIE will also be removing Cyberpunk 2077 from PlayStation Store until further notice.”

That was Sony’s statement regarding the move. Unlike CD Projekt Red, Sony can actually make good on their promise of a refund. The Cyberpunk developer had earlier suggested that unhappy players return their copies for refunds, but they can’t exactly force retailers to comply. This led to a lot of frustrated players being denied refunds from various retailers.

There are supposedly major patches for the game coming in January and February, but that’s little comfort for players who purchased the title when it came out. The lengthy wait for these patches implies that a lot of work has to go into them, which in turn shows just how unfinished this game is.

The general consensus is that PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were merely an afterthought to the developer. The game was developed with PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S in mind and then whittled down into something that would run on last-gen consoles. It’s a giant mess whichever way you look at it.

After years in development and several delays, gamers rightfully expected, at the very least, a finished product. Instead, they got not only a large assortment of bugs, both minor and game-breaking, but just downright lazy design.

The developer has apologized, of course, and taken responsibility for the disastrous launch, but again, that doesn’t do much for disappointed gamers.

Now it’s time to see if Microsoft is going to follow suit because the Xbox One version of the game hasn’t fared any better.
