Do you hear them? Do you hear the children of the night?

It might not be night in Verdansk, but those are howling wolves. You can hear them clear as day in the below clip. Check it out.

There’s certainly no mistaking that sound. It’s loud and recognizable and has reportedly been heard at three of the four corners of the Verdansk map in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Now that it’s been well documented, players are putting their heads together and trying to figure out what it means. Just what are the wolves trying to tell us? Is it about Timmy?

Some players believe that the wolves are heralding the arrival of zombies. That connection seems pretty tenuous and relying on the assumption that creepy noises indicate creepy content.

Plus, zombies have by-and-large been a Treyarch thing, while this is Infinity Ward we’re talking about. They did implement a zombies mode, once, in Infinite Warfare, but a one-time occurrence is pretty shaky ground to make an assumption off of.

Then there are the bunkers, which presented a mystery that fans went wild trying to solve. It’s been pointed out the howling noises do sound like they’re coming from inside of a structure, rather than from out in the open wild. It’s a small detail, but possibly an important one, and it does lend credibility to the theory that Infinity Ward is about to open the bunkers.

Finally, there are the [CLASSIFIED] areas of the map, some of which happen to correspond with where the howls are heard. Are those areas being opened up? More importantly, will they be teeming with spooky wolves?

Whatever the wolves seem to be announcing, the one thing that does seem clear is that they’re announcing something. This doesn’t feel like something thrown in just for fun. It feels very deliberate. Add in the fact that Verdansk has plenty of obvious secrets waiting to be revealed and it’s a very safe bet that this is all leading up to something big.

Then there’s the timing of it all. More and more players are noticing the sound, which leads some to believe that Infinity Ward has been intentionally making it more noticeable. If that is the case, it stands to reason that whatever is on the way is going to make its debut in the near future.

What do you think? Zombies, bunkers, classified areas, or something else entirely? Maybe a practical joke from the sound guys? What if wolves infiltrated the sound studio and put the sounds in themselves? Whatever’s going on, let’s hope the inevitable patch is smaller in size, like the vehicle exploit fix that was released a few days ago.
