The Xbox Game Pass for PC continues to receive amazing additions every month. That trend continues in January with the addition of What Remains of Edith Finch. It’s a narrative-based experience from the developer Giant Sparrow, and since launch, it has gone on to receive amazing reviews for its artistic direction and emotional story.

In What Remains of Edith Finch, you play as young girl named Edith. She’s the last one of her family members still alive. She’s confused by these turn of events and sets out to the Finch house to explore the possibilities of something more being at play.

The game goes through each family member’s life. Each story starts out pretty normal, sort of like a fairytale, but gradually turns into a nightmare. You’ll play as the different family members too after Edith discovers one of their keepsakes locked somewhere in the seemingly endless house.

It’s pretty sobering seeing how much loss has occurred in this family. You can tell there is more to the surface, like a curse the family can’t escape. It’s like their lives are doomed no matter how hard they try or the paths they take.

Edith comes to grips with this as she walks through the house room by room. Giant Sparrow designed a fantastic setting. You’re constantly invested in the story, hoping to find more clues about why the Finch family has been put in such a tragic position.

If you like narrative-based experiences, then What Remains of Edith Finch is one of the best offerings on the marketplace. It’s worth a playthrough, for the sake of storytelling alone. Although the visuals, music, and themes will gradually start immersing you in this family’s history, which just begs to be explored.

Very few games broach tough topics like tragedy and loss like the way Giant Sparrow does in this interactive game. Their excellent writing is on full display throughout the entire game as well.

If you have Xbox Game Pass for PC, then putting this membership to use on January 21st is a good idea. This and several other games will be new to the platform. That should give members plenty to enjoy as they try to focus on having a good start to the new year.

What Remains of Edith Finch is the perfect game to get wrapped up in and focus on someone else’s problems for a change. You’ll realize it could always be worse.
