The Lord of the Rings is such a beloved movie franchise for a lot of gamers today. They took elements from the J.R.R. Tolkien books and put them on the silver screens, with much success. The movies were so successful that it was only a matter of time before the franchise crossed over into video games.

There have been so many Lord of the Ring games to date. But never before has one featured Gollum front and center. That’s the premise of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, which just received a new teaser trailer.

It doesn’t give away too many details nor does it show any gameplay, but it gives fans an idea of the theme and visual direction the developer Daedelic is going in. We see our first glimpse of Gollum, formerly known as Smeagol.

His character model looks really good, as does the Mordor volcano featured off in the distance. It’s important to note that this will be a next-gen title coming to the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC in 2021. Fans can thus expect some beautiful graphics, an appetizing thought considering how interesting Mordor already is as a setting.

In terms of gameplay, it will mix in stealth action with narrative decision-making. The two elements coupled together should keep gameplay unique as players unlock more lore and secrets about Gollum as a character.

Lead game designer Martin Wiikes has compared some of the elements to Prince of Persia. The link is particularly appropriate in terms of the vertical climbing that Gollum will be doing. All the while, he’ll have to use a lot of stealth to move through the dangerous threats lurking about Mordor.

Additionally, fans will get to experience the struggle between Gollum and Smeagol. The former is always looking to gain the upper hand on foes through selfish tactics, while the latter has an innocent take on the world. He just wants to be merry and do the right thing.

The choices players make in The Lord of the Rings: Gollum ultimately impact how the story plays out. Although Gollum won’t be able to use direct combat to deal with threats, the game still looks like a lot of fun and filled with tension.

If you’re a Lord of the Rings fan, it seems like a must-play game to enjoy when it releases later in 2021 on next-gen consoles. Who knows what secrets will be revealed in the story?
