According to Annapurna Interactive’s gaming presentation from last week, the atmospheric adventure gameWhat Remains of Edith Finch will be getting an upgrade for the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.

Being governed by the largest corporation in the world provides several benefits for Xbox, including the ability to make multibillion-dollar purchases on the spur of the moment and a reduced focus on making money. Another is that, in contrast to Sony, Xbox can afford to be quite lenient with its upgrade restrictions.

In addition to being launched in 2017 on all the major platforms, What Remains of Edith Finch was also ported to the Nintendo Switch in 2019. Finally, on July 28, 2022, the game received a next-gen update.

Even better, PS5 owners can get the upgrade for free if they own the game. The catch is that only people who purchased the game independently of a PS Plus subscription are qualified for the promotion.

Fans were thrilled when Annapurna made a choice public earlier. But unfortunately, not every PlayStation 5 user can benefit from the free upgrade.

Anyone who already has the PS4 version of the game can now update without paying any further fees. However, Sony has decided that PS Plus subscribers who have purchased the game will not be eligible for the free update. Those who paid the total subscription amount find this rather odd and perhaps anti-consumer.

Notably, this is not the first incident with games from the Sony service. For example, after Final Fantasy VII Remake became available for PS Plus subscribers to download in March, Square Enix offered a free update for the PS5 version, but there was a catch.

It was only accessible if you paid for the project outright rather than just picking it up through a subscription.
