A few weeks ago it was announced that the creative team behind Super Smash Bros. Ultimate wanted Sora from the long running Disney/Square Enix series Kingdom Hearts to join the battle as a new DLC character.

However, Disney put the proverbial kibosh on that, stopping talks with Nintendo before they ever really had a chance to begin. Because of that, it is unlikely that fans of Kingdom Hearts will ever see their title hero face off with the likes of Mario, Kirby, Link, and the rest of the Smash Bros. roster.

However, that hasn’t stopped a number of fans in Japan from voicing their opinions.

A recent poll held by Japan’s Inside-Games asked its readers which character they most wanted to see included in future DLC packs for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

The answer was overwhelming. It was Sora by a wide margin.

Sora was far and away the number one pick, with Dante from Devil May Cry coming in second place. Rounding out the list at the very bottom were Geno from Super Mario RPG and Goku from the Dragon Ball franchise.

Of course, there were more choices offered than just these four.

Here are the results:

  1. Sora from Kingdom Hearts
  2. Dante from Devil May Cry
  3. Hunter from Monster Hunter
  4. Red from Xenoblade Chronicles 2
  5. 2B from Nior Automata
  6. Crash Bandicoot from Crash Bandicoot
  7. Waddle Dee/Bandana Waddle Dee from Kirby
  8. Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII
  9. Arle from Puyo Puyo
  10. Steve from Minecraft
  11. Saver from Fate
  12. Kirito from Sword Art Online
  13. Hakurei Reimu from Touhou Project
  14. Goku from Dragon Ball
  15. Geno from Super Mario RPG

Sora received 290 votes, with Dante receiving 91. Not only was Sora the only choice to receive votes in the triple digits, but he beat out his closest rival by 199 votes.

If rumors are to be believed Square Enix was all for allowing Sora to enter the fray as a part of the Smash Bros. Ultimate roster, but Disney remained the sole hangup.

This makes sense as a number of Square Enix characters have made their way onto the Smash Bros. stage, most notably Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII. It also included the Hero from Dragon Quest, another Square property, in the first Fighters Pass.

Many have surmised that, initially, Sora was meant for the spot that Hero ultimately claimed.

However, all hope is not lost. There are six more fighters coming in the second volume of the Fighters Pass DLC, and if Nintendo and Square can get Disney to play ball, we might get Sora in Smash Bros. after all.
