The game is currently in its tech test for those that pre-ordered and members of Xbox Game Pass. So far, players seem to be liking what they’re seeing. Particularly, the Arcade mode is getting a lot of shine. So, what exactly is this mode and why does it matter in the grand scheme of things? Let’s took a closer look.

Well, breaking down a little bit of what Arcade offers is the multiplayer design director, Ryan Cleven. He made comments about the Gears of War franchise being a pretty different multiplayer experience compared to its peers. Most notably, close combat is regularly used. Whereas, other multiplayer shooters involve more open spaces — where you have plenty of room to plan your next attack.

Cleven believes that this new Arcade mode can help those who’re not used to this sort of close quarters combat adjust. This sounds like a promising idea in theory. Picking up Gears of War for the first time is a bit of a shock, especially in online matches. You have to be quick on your feet, as opponents swarm around with chainsaws and shotguns. One false step and you’re dead.

How Arcade works is actually pretty simple. Before every match, players will have the choice between several different characters. These include bad guys, too. Each character already has a weapon loadout put together, which is nice if you don’t want to tinker around with settings and just get on with the match.

Each player will also have a designated bounty. You get skulls for every bounty and kill you get in the match, which can then be used to further your weapon tree. It’s a pretty smart design that should take some of the challenge away for first-time players.

The Coalition appears to be putting a heavy emphasis on weapon variety, as opposed to just shotgun combat. It has frustrated a lot of players over the years, so it’s nice to see the developers make the much-needed improvement.
