Bungie has been hard at work rolling out extra Destiny 2 events this summer. They are trying to fill the void created by the delay on Destiny 2 Shadowkeep. The studio is declaring Hive hunting season starting on Tuesday, September 3 and running through September 10. This gives the community one week to complete several challenges that require the killing of a very large amount of Hive.

There is some loot available including seasonal rewards and improved Menagerie loot for the remainder of the Season of Opulence. This was all explained in a recent blog post by Bungie, including an outline of what will be required to complete the challenge. What players must do is:

  • Defeat 175,000 Wave 7 Escalation Protocol bosses
  • Defeat 300 million Hive on Mars
  • Defeat Nokris in the Strange Terrain Nightfall Strike 150,000 times
  • Defeat Xol in the Will of the Thousands Nightfall Strike 100,000 times
  • Use 300,000 Override Frequencies on Mars

Destiny 2 Twitch streamer Gladd did some quick math and shared it on Twitter to show how much work each Guardian will have to do on average. The time span is built around a one-week timer so there is a hefty chunk of combat that must be done.

The problem that many are running into is that with the game having been out so long many of the players are already using the really powerful gear and Strike-exclusive drops. Escalation Protocol weapons can not be modded, and the entire battle will not start dropping Destiny 2 Armor 2.0 gear until after the release of Shadowkeep.

Due to the Escalation Protocol not being a rewarding experience for a majority of the community, Bungie is trying to convince more to help in at least one Mars Nightfall during Hive week. If anyone does participate, they will receive a unique emblem available only during this special event.

Bungie has promised that is the community reaches all the goals Calus will unlock additional rewards for successful Menagerie completions. Once the goals are met, players will be guaranteed two rewards when slotting their runes and opening chests.

If this does happen, then, players could receive up to five drops from the Menagerie chest by Friday, September 27. This will be bringing a lot of players back into the Menagerie grind in search of more drops and as always more gear.

The community at Destiny 2 is always looking for something to do so many of the players expect the event to be completed quickly. This means that if you put down the game for a while this might be a good time to return for some extra loot.
