The return of Shroud to Twitch was announced on his Twitter account, randomly and without warning. After almost 2 months of not streaming, Shroud is back. At the time of writing, he has almost 500,000 viewers.
And 13,000 subs in the first 5 minutes of the stream.
Shroud left Twitch last year to join the streaming platform Mixer as part of a huge multi-million dollar deal.
A few months later, Mixer collapsed. Bought out by Facebook Gaming. Shroud, alongside Ninja (also in a contract with Mixer), have now both returned to Twitch.
It was clear that Shroud’s return stream was going to be massive. However, he has been unassuming during the comeback stream. His introductory video didn’t even have any audio.
Plus, he posted on Twitter an hour before he actually went live. People sat and waited almost a full hour to wait for his stream to go live.
He said he was expecting around 200,000 viewers, but it has been consistently at 500,000 since the stream started. Many people were expecting answers to the mystery of why he hadn’t streamed in over a month.
In answer to why he hasn’t streamed for the past months – despite dozens of questions from high profile streamers and friends on Twitter – Shroud only said that he had enjoyed his vacation. There were no other reasons than he was taking time off from his streaming schedule (pretty tightly enforced at Mixer.)
There was a lot of speculation about what Shroud was going to do when he returned. After landing a huge deal with Mixer, some even suggested he was going to retire.
It’s clear from this return stream that Shroud is just Shroud. He’s online to play video games. There will be headshots. There will be calm, cool, and casual gaming. As Shroud himself said, there are no Lamborghini overlays here.
Shroud, in response to his 500,000 viewers, said that “he is a normal dude who loves to play games a lot.” It’s for this reason that he remains one of the most popular streamers online.
Despite the mystery surrounding DrDisrespect’s disappearance from Twitch following a heavy-handed ban, the platform continues to go from strength to strength.
Although both Facebook Gaming and Mixer had tried to tackle Amazon‘s control of the market, both Ninja and Shroud have ultimately returned to Twitch.
