Godfall, which is a Sony exclusive that’s being published by Gearbox Software, is set to release alongside the PlayStation 5 this coming November, and despite its publishers saying that it’s not a “service game,” you will need an active internet connection to play. Also, for online co-op, you’ll need an active PlayStation Plus subscription.
The confirmation that players will need an active internet connection to enjoy Godfall comes courtesy of the game’s official Twitter account, and alongside the announcement, they’re insisting that it’s still not a service game.
Godfall is described as a third-person, action RPG, and it’s being developed by Counterplay Games. In the game, players will have five weapon sets to choose from: longsword, dual blades, polearm, two-handed war hammer, and the two-handed greatsword. With these weapons, players will take control of one of the last exalted Knight’s Order to prevent a major apocalyptic event.
Prior to the development of Godfall, Counterplay Games worked on other loot-based RPGs such as Destiny 2, but this will be their first major AAA release. The game was debuted at The Game Awards last year and was the first game confirmed for Sony’s next-gen console.
During a recent interview with GameSpot, Gearbox Software’s CEO, Randy Pitchford, said that the coming leap from the current-gen to the next-gen is going to be the biggest jump forward in console gaming history, although the advancements might not be noticeable right off the bat. Regardless, Pitchford thinks it’ll be the biggest jump forward since the industry standards changed from 2D to 3D.
“I always get so pumped when there’s an ability to take a step forward with new hardware and new technology, and anything that’s going to empower us,” said Pitchford while speaking with GameSpot. “I think customers will realize how profound of a difference it is to have the throughput capability that these new platforms bring. It’s just absolutely unreal. The leap there with PS5 and Xbox Series X is the biggest leap I have ever seen in the history of console generations. I’m saying, including the leap from 2D to 3D. It’s going to change the way we think about every bit of our experiences.”
Of course, Gearbox is also working on bringing Borderlands 3 to the PlayStation 5, alongside a new game mode called Arms Race, which is being described as a completely new experience for Borderlands fans.
As previously noted, Godfall will launch alongside the PlayStation 5 on November 12.
