Knights, samurai, and vikings, oh my! Ubisoft‘s 2017 hack and slash action title For Honor will be temporarily free to play on all platforms starting this Thursday. The promotion ends at the end of the day Sunday for console players, while PC players have until Monday afternoon.

If you like the game and you don’t want it to go away, you’ll be happy to know that it will be available at an 80% discount all weekend. Discounts really don’t get much better than that. Keep in mind that the starter edition is only $15 on Steam, and that’s before the discount.

As is usually the case with these try-before-you-buy type of promotions, if you do decide to purchase the full title, any progress that you make during the free weekend will indeed carry over. It would be awful to put all that work in over a couple of days, just to have to start all over when you buy the game. For some, that would be a big enough deterrent to not buy it at all.

For Honor was nominated for a few awards when it came out and won two of them: Best PC Game and Best Playstation 4 Game at Gamescom 2016. Ubisoft has released multiple updates for the title, and one of those updates, the Marching Fire expansion, brought the Chinese Wu-Lin as a playable faction.

February 2020 saw the release of the latest major DLC, Year of Reckoning, which brought four new seasons, armor, weapons, and in-game events. According to the Ubisoft website, the free weekend will allow access to everything in the Standard Edition of the game.

Considering that For Honor has been part of both PlayStation Plus and the Epic Games Store’s free games promotions, chances are good that a lot of players already have the title. This is likely why they’re offering such a steep discount. It’s been three years since release and anybody who really wanted the game has likely picked it up at some point. Right now it’s less about making a profit on base game sales and more on building a base of active players.

A lot of players grab these free games when they become available because they’re free, so oftentimes they go unplayed. This weekend might be a good time to hop into For Honor to see what it’s all about when the servers are packed.

Where do you stand? Are you an avid player or have you not given it a whirl yet?
