Publisher Assemble Entertainment and two-person development team Pixelpogo have announced its next project. Together, the companies are releasing the action-platformer game Super Catboy for PC and Mac next year.

Super Catboy stars a cat who is accompanied by a “deranged-yet-cute sidekick companion.” Catboy is on a quest to dismantle the plans of his creator so he can go back to doing what he enjoys best: nothing. But, that requires taking down the threat of sinister anthropomorphic dogs.

A short announcement trailer around one minute long shows off some of the illustrations and its gameplay. The game has high-bit pixel art that replicates the 90s style but with a modern twist.

The game will have players running and collecting coins, jumping over crates, and shooting barrels to make them explode. Catboy also has additional helpful felines at his disposal, such as using his claws to grab onto trees to avoid pitfalls and more.

Super Catboy was inspired by the golden era of 16-bit platformers during the 1990s, cat videos, and intense action shooter games. At the same time, the game includes graphics and gameplay mechanics that players from the modern era are accustomed to.

Arthur Eckmann, Co-Founder, Pixelpogo, commented about Super Catboy, stating:

Super Catboy combines elements of various platformers, run’n’gun, and beat’em up games, but offers unique variety with the inclusion of bonus levels that feature an alternative gameplay style. We were inspired by iconic games like Mega Man X, Metal Slug, Donkey Kong Country and the like, which have shaped the game designers we are today.

Those who want to try out the game can check out the pre-alpha demo on the game’s official website. The demo requires a download but doesn’t require Steam. The content of the demo may significantly differ from the final release of the game but will give players an introduction to the title.

Currently, the title will support nine languages. They include English, French, Italian, German, Japanese, and more. Many across the world will have the opportunity to play the game when it launches next year.

Super Catboy still has several months in development. Those who want to follow the latest news can wishlist the game on Steam now or follow the developer on social media. The publisher also has an official Discord server where the community can discuss the game or any of its other titles.
