Hopoo Games is celebrating a birthday! Their roguelike title Risk of Rain 2 has officially been available for a year. This whole year has been spent in early access, and Hopoo Games has made a great amount of progress.

To celebrate, the developers are making Risk of Rain 2 free to play temporarily. The free period will be between Thursday, April 2nd until Monday, April 6th. If you know before that time hits that you’ll be wanting to play this game a bit more after the end of the free to play period, you can get it for 20% off until April 6th as well.

Risk of Rain 2 is one of the examples of an early access game that has real value being in an unfinished state. Rather than being an unfinished buggy mess as so many early access titles are, Hopoo Games’ title is a decently polished and incredibly hectic roguelike shooter. You can hop in solo or bring up to four friends with you to try and get a bit farther than you did before you died last time.

Part of why the game is in such good condition is because one of the main goals of the early access is to build a community. Hopoo is looking for feedback from their community to broaden their horizons and find new ways to improve the game, as well as to create meaningful and consistent content.

In terms of the amount of time they intend to spend in early access, Hopoo intended to stay in this extended beta for a year! That means that you should probably be expecting to see them hit a full release sometime in the near future.

They’ve spent this early access building that community, to be certain. Their title has almost 51,000 reviews as of writing this, and the reviews that come in are overwhelmingly positive. Their Discord server also has more than 130,000 members, so that community that they were working to build was definitely a resounding success.

In terms of consistent, meaningful content, the title just released their latest update patch that adds in the Artifact system. Between the console version and the PC version, there has been a fantastic amount of consistent and meaningful content being dropped.

If you’ve had any interest in Risk of Rain 2, now would be the best time to hop aboard. Once the early access ends, the price will likely increase, so jump in before you end up paying more than you need to!
