According to an official release from PlayStation, Mortal Shell II for the PS5 will be out next year, and angered mayhem has been unleashed on the Internet since that first-ever look was released for this fast-paced action-RPG. A brief, brutal and ugly-looking dive into the world of the game hit the official PlayStation Twitter feed, and reactions were all over the spectrum. While a few say they cannot wait for it, others do not even see any point in having a sequel.
Mortal Shell, which debuted suddenly and unexpectedly back in 2020, was a Souls-like with one major difference: Shells could “harden” to take hits in the heat of battle. It wasn’t much to brag about, yet it certainly had its fan base. Now, with Mortal Shell II in the works, the real question is: Can it fix those original flaws without compromising the very thing that made the original so dear to many?
Going by the comments under the PlayStation tweet, opinions seem to be split down the middle. Some players like @GG3_xyz are in fully: “Didn’t expect a sequel but I’m 100% here for it.” Others are even more enthused, stating, “It looks so much better” according to @KoKa1AShOt. Describing it as a day one purchase, @Web3Hashira_ stated that they felt the graphics and gameplay were worthy.
There are quite some people, though, that aren’t really on board. @SaiyanPride45 was blunt with his views: “The first one was garbage-who asked for this?”. @Macksonsantosx could barely contain his disappointment, declaring it to be just “another generic Souls of dubious quality.” Ouch. But there are also a few who’ve adored the original and do have a couple of criticisms: @Icewallowcumin hopes the devs fixed the “sloggy” movement, while @iKarma95 spoke of a notorious bug in the first game that forced players to restart every single damn time they died – calling it a “dog ass title”.
Then there’s the weird drama. One user, @GuadalumpenOne, accused a retro gaming forum of profiting illegally off of PlayStation’s intellectual property, which… okay, that’s a whole other mess. Not sure how that ties in with Mortal Shell II, but hey, Twitter is crazy.
The first ever Mortal Shell II trailer would suggest a polished and highly charged experience. However, followers of the first obstruction must maintain that hope until they have some taste of gameplay in their hands.
For now, 2025 is set to become a memory charged year for hardcore-action-RPG-weebs. If you somehow missed the exhilarating ride of the first, now might just be the right time to jump aboard – a bit janky or not. Or, you know, just wait till the sequel comes out; hopefully, they fix all glaring issues. Either way, the Souls-like will literally never stop.
What do you think? Have you been waiting for Mortal Shell II with bated breath, or is this just another glorified Souls ripoff? Either way, 2024 will be one to remember.
