What with the sudden reveal of a gameplay trailer for MindsEye, it seemed like the world over of gaming had their share of hype. The very sudden drop of this trailer spawned much conversation, some unflattering in the extreme. Some, in fact, have called it a mish-mash of Cyberpunk, Watch Dogs, and Deus Ex, while others just laughed it off, saying it felt like a PS3 remaster.

The trailer then showed hacking mechanics under neon-lit open world, high-speed chases, and somewhat controversial gunplay. Players have been applauding the graphics, calling them “dope”, and some lone detractors have attacked the movement animations, saying some were too stiff while others were oddly rendered. One commenter said that the gunplay looks “terrible”, and honestly, that clip in the trailer at 4:58 where some guy just *poofs* into existence really doesn’t help either.

Now comes the whole stature of an ex-GTA developer. While such eminence lends instant credibility, it also leaves a chunk of gaming populace in disgusting skepticism:

Some would like to place MindsEye next to *The Day Before*, that greater-than-life vaporware fiasco, which… yeah, yikes. There is, however, one player who has already been sold on the game and said he would “most certainly be downloading on release day.”

One weak hope for community content was stated. Another member of the community stated that the tag “Official Content” hints at some sort of mod support, which could really give the game some serious replay value. That is one huge win if it pans out, but given the number of games that have promised modding tools and then dropped the ball, one is definitely better off holding judgment until something concrete is announced.

Other times, the subject of price comes up. At $60, MindsEye is demanding full AAA price, whereas some gamers are going to have to hold out for outrageously deep discounts. A user bit back with a joke: “Looks like a game I’ll buy for $10.”

Verdict: clearly trying to make its own mark in the open-world action space. Whether, though, it is going to stand tall or just succumb to weight-this is a question pending right now. The trailer indeed has some moments of brilliance-the hacking gameplay is amazing, and the cityscapes are breathtaking, to be sure-but others just feel so much half-baked.

Rumored to have a launch date on June 10, we do not have long to wait to see if the hype surrounding the former GTA dev’s passion project is worthwhile, or if it’s going to be just another run-of-the-mill open-world game crowing for attention. Either way, MindsEye is worth keeping an eye on-if only for the drama.
