Just recently, a brand new batch of in-game loot was released into Marvel Rivals through the Combat Chest, and if flashy costumes are going to hold the hype, the players are still debating. There are three bundles for costumes, new moods, and Emojis, but the most important thing is that the Jeff Emoji Bundle gets unlocked back-to-back for Premium Edition holders. For some, holding new coats is the hype; yet some gamers maintain their concern in balancing issues and character requests in terms of the game’s very direction.
The Combat Chest has an overload of customization options. For example, the Jeff Emoji Bundle has already created its own level of controversy. There have been cries from some players: Jonah (@NahImGhost) themselves pleaded that there should be more Jeff skins, saying, “We, are the only person in the game without a new one.” Harald (@unown24) sarcastically slammed the idea of a daily unlock cap, “Ah yes, the combat chest.. that has a freaking daily cap, cause god forbid u unlock it all in 1 day!”
However, there is more weighing on the minds of the players than just cosmetics. Responses to the tweet from Marvel Rivals deteriorated into stormy disputes about character balancing, team dynamics, and demands for more heroes. Tempest Sun (@TheTempestSun) blasted for another player claiming that Squirrel Girl needs a nerf: “The fact you mentioned Squirrel Girl with Hella and Hawkeye in needing nerfs is absolutely mind-blowing.” In the meantime, FPS_DEMON (@FPS_DemonYT) went on alleging that devs are ignoring the community: “How about instead of adding stupid shit to ur game how about you stop nerfing characters that need skill and buffing characters that is all aim no 🧠ur games gonna die out fast if yall don’t listen to ur community.”
The drama is not only going on about balancing. Some players are fixated on blaming their teammates for failing to do their job properly. Theidkguy (@xboxonefa) just ranted about carrying matches: “I’m doing all the damaging, I’m doing all the killing, I’m doing all the objectives—what more should I do, kind idiot?” ENdZej_ (@endzej_) countered that high damage does not always mean effective damage, “That’s a lot of damage but not effective dmg, basically feeding the enemy supports ult charge.”
More character requests are also flooding in, pushing to introduce their favorite Marvel heroes. False (@FalseReven) is pushing hard for Cyclops’ addition, joking, “Day 108 of telling NetEase to introduce my boy Cyclops but it will be him giving whoever it is in Marvel rivals the hardest Dap which he is known for.” Vukester (@RealVukester) is at day #171 for White Tiger, while House Of Mayo (@House_of_Mayo) is pushing for Solem, a Native American mutant with adamantium skin, saying, “I’m looking for the first time ever in gaming history. a #NativeAmerican Marvel Character to show up in a console Game.”
Performance has not been spared from complaints; Kevinch (@Kevinch03) reported the lag in the PlayStation menu and emote wheel, while Daniel Salvato (@Daniel_Salvat0) unfairly accused the MVP animations: “Devs you need to make more sense with mvps, legendary groot mvp is 5 seconds, legendary magneto mvp is 12 seconds.”
So for new styles being sold by the Combat Chest, it is evident that Marvel Rivals players want more than just cosmetics. Balance changes and new characters; plus smoother performance are real high on their wish list. Whether NetEase will listen is still an open-ended question; however, all would agree that this community goes loud when it says what it wants. One consolation would be the cute shark emoji!
