In-town event S2.5 Content Incentive was dropped and players ran into the turmoil. Not to say many were happy about it! Fronted by Ultron crashing the “so-called most glamorous event of the year,” players are now invited to let their creativity loose in long videos, short clips, and in-game photography, for 8,000 units in prizes! Considering this much hype, one would expect the social media channels to be fueling more excitement; however, nothing of that sort exists. In their stead, you have equally half-baked and unrelated complaints about balancing and a whole set of Jeff the Shark drama doing the rounds instead.
The event, worthy of a word. Marvel Rivals challenges its players to record the chaos brought about by Ultron’s invasion, with submissions sponsored on social media under specific hashtags and via the official event page. That looks like a beautiful and innovative way to go about community engagement, considering there are rewards involved. Well, scroll through a few of the answers. Oof. The talk soon descends from hype to insults aimed at the current state of the game.
Keep Ultron for a second. Whereas Ultron is the event boss, he is also one of the most controversial characters in the current game. Some players, including @alih1045363, swear that he is overpowered and go on to provide examples, citing an ambivalent “10 W 6 L, 6 MVPs” in reference to their matches. Others, on the other hand, see him as just a glorified DPS with a somewhat useless ultimate. @ThatRevenantGuy could not stop: “If Bucky and No Skill Girl can wipe squads, why can’t Ultron?” @cmarc057, meanwhile, claims his kit is “held together by fast ult as a bandaid solution.” He is quite desperate for a rework.
And then Jeff. Oh, Jeff. The wrong rework brought darkness to the community. @BobbySchumDG lamented, “I’m still so sad about Jeff…” while @gork said it was “the worst thing to happen to Rivals in ages.” The general consensus seems to be: Old Jeff was king. New Jeff? “Shark bait,” as one voice put it. There are even some who want the revert before the start of Season 3.
They’re angry about balance, all right. Another thing is Matchmaking, a constant pile of complaints, one of them being @Johnnyrebel4re1 bashing it with “EOMM trash” (that stands for Engagement-Optimized Matchmaking, if you were wondering). @ChuckyP1977 said the MVP system was “totally broken.” @paradigm_ape randomly declared the whole thing “trash.” Very harsh.
Now there is some hope left. A few are actually digging on this event; for example, @SCrowEzz is holding a giveaway to celebrate the update. And hey, if nifty chaos is what you live for, S2.5 incentives could be your big break—assuming you can get past the flying Iron Man bugs and the tragic downfall of Jeff.
So yes. The newest Marvel Rivals event is out, and so is the hay. A few are here for the rewards, and some are just here to watch the shenanigans unfold. But clear contrast: the players have cast caution into the wind. Now, who’s capturing some Ultron chaos, or just spreading themselves thin barking about it on Twitter? Well, the vibes are…uh, interesting.
