The new Sonic Frontiers artwork recently unveiled at Tokyo Game Show is quite intriguing. There isn’t much information to be gleaned from it, but the artwork hints that Sonic’s friends will have a bigger role than first anticipated. Additionally, it serves as our first formal confirmation that Knuckles, Tails, and Amy will attend.

The Koco, or more simply put, the new Chao, are the real stars of the show here. Each member of the Sonic group has a Koco as a pet, according to the ad, which describes them as little rock animals. Each Koco even takes on the traits of its owner, making it even more like the pet Chao we cared for in Sonic Adventures 1 and 2.

Fans eager to analyze each bit of Frontiers content we can get our hands on have heartily welcomed this new promotional artwork. But, unfortunately, since Sega appears determined to keep the game cloaked in secrecy, much of it is still a secret.

But according to this most recent update, it seems Frontiers will finally offer us the Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Knuckles team-up we’ve been waiting for. The last time this happened was with Sonic Boom, a non-canon game with various character versions. Before that, Sonic ’06 was the last collaboration that came close to this one, but I don’t think anyone here is eager to include it.

So far, all we know about the Koco is that collecting them in-game increases Sonic’s overall statistics and even his maximum number of rings. It would be great if, as we did with Chaos, we could spend some time with them once they’ve been rounded up and delivered to the Hermit Koco and Elder Koco.

To round up Sonic’s crew, we knew Knuckles would be in the game because he was confirmed to be in an animated prologue. Some players even made it further than Sega expected in Frontiers’ Gamescom demo and found Knuckles. So even though this is the first time we’ve seen the gang together, I’m hoping it won’t be the last.
