Korean gamers have some very peculiar stuff being tested in Fortnite, and players worldwide are either confused, envious, or downright appalled. So, the situation is: those Fortnite players who would attend PC Cafes have a monthly switching roster of a temporary set of exclusive cosmetics and items awarded to them. Here’s the kicker: when these items are physically checked out of the cafe, they just cease to exist.
Used to be a perk for those who subscribed to Fortnite Crew, and later who were switched with PC Cafes in Korea. And indeed, current Korean-only perks in case you’re wondering-again-those perks are. So, forget for even a split second about tricks to use on VPN-gift this DRIP to your pals in the States.
The gaming community is going ballistic. Some players do genuinely consider this a cool real-life activation. Twitter user @addmetocreative said, “Really hope they bring this to other places, it seems really cool.” While others go low as in @KallenYae’s cruel retort: “Imagine going to a cafe just to get a cosmetic that you can only use on a cafe lol it’s so stupid.”
There is a pretty interesting backstory behind it. “@Entick” said: “Korea is one of the regions where Fortnite has flopped for 7 years.” Given that PUBG and Eternal Return are ruling the Korean battle royale scene, this PC Cafe perk may be Epic Games’ last desperate outreached hand on the market. Smart move or clutching at straws? The gamers really have no clue.
The question everyone has been dying to hear an answer to: WHAT IS IT WITH THESE UNHEARD-OF ITEMS? The original tweet really stopped short of specifying the nature of those items. Both @BrownyanYK and @yamiberryblast went off with simultaneous tweets reading: “What are the cosmetics?” Now that is the real question; is Epic going to come out and say they’re actually exclusive, or is it just a teaser look at what they’re about to sell in the shop?
Yet international travel is quickly becoming a plan of action. @TeamLeet9 quipped: “Me on my way to korea!!” (interesting gif), and @dowe211683 tweeted: “Guess I’m booking a flight to Korea,” better check those plane ticket prices before getting all excited, folks.
The transience of these perks is slippery to some. @Kaazrah calls it “dumb af” and added that he was “glad that didn’t get added to Crew,” while @cyberfox227 barked back, “Temporary is kinda mid.”
Now, for the chilling part: this might just be the beginning. @LazerLyss speculates, “Korea is a test market and they will eventually release it everywhere.” Will we be seeing similar things in game cafes around the world? That question is for time to answer.
What is certain is that Epic continues to try to find ways with which to keep the Fortnite brand shining… or throwing some sparks. Whether the Korea-exclusive trial is deemed a hit or a flop, it certainly has gotten everyone talking. Hence, engagement in a battle royale game is a very big thing. Now excuse us as we check out the flight fares to Seoul—
