Bethesda and id have unleashed a beast called DOOM: The Dark Ages, and the internet lost its collective mind. In reference to an incredibly silly crossover moment- or maybe a sly one about Oblivion?- Bethesda Studios tweeted that they “took the wrong portal.” The emotion is-chaotic-the right environment-for the fans to be hyped, confused, demand a fix.

Most importantly, that is excitement: @EvictionX called it “the craziest crossover in gaming history,” whereas @nin10matt loudly demanded some DOOM armor: “Take my money.” In the meanwhile, @SteveD_CCGames dared Bethesda to release a $20 DLC putting DOOM monsters into an Oblivion gate. If there really was such a thing, we would wholeheartedly support buying.

Some, as is to be expected, are in doubt. The HDR implementation is drawing curses far worse than any curse demons have ever offered in their Crucible. @faria_ronan labeled it as “completely awful” and “washed out,” with @davencheicodes dropping some very technical explanations in the replies (nerds, check it out). From @dryii’s perspective, everything looks fine on his setup; so who is right, really? Well, it depends on whether or not your TV costs more than rent.

Then comes the obligatory angry mob. @Dream_ESP went all keyboard-warrior mode, throwing around complaints such as “$80 launch price” and “shit graphics,” while @gdbnere claimed that Bethesda is “ruining everything” by making DOOM “like Halo.” That’s a pretty bold claim, though, considering DOOM has been ripping and tearing well before Halo was even an idea in Master Chief’s head.

We cannot leave out our boy, @Rasta_Efx, throwing down some comments about “basura sin calidad” and 60 FPS being a “mediocre scam.” Google translate tried. The sentiment is clear: he is pissed.

In the midst of the carnage, other people just… vibe. @FuckGizzles joked about “coming through the portal” like a demon surfer, while @Thadamirshidey1 started quoting Oblivion Guards from the game. Because, obviously, they had to.

What about the future? Bethesda has yet to come forward and address the HDR complaints, but given the backlash, a patch is probably inevitable. And should that Oblivion-DOOM crossover ever see the light of day? Well, Todd Howard’s wallet has just grown considerably heavier.

For now, however, DOOM: The Dark Ages is live, is wacky, and has its fans arguing like it’s 1993. Some things never change.
