Studio MDHR has announced its 2017 title Cuphead, is collaborating with the fast-food chain Arby’s. Toys based on the game’s characters will be included in Kids Meals in select locations in the US and Canada. The collaboration will last for approximately 12 weeks.
The collection contains one of eight limited-edition toys, which includes a token based on one of the game’s heroes plus a papercraft boss kit. Kids or adults can build the boss and then launch coins at it. Using Arby’s Cuphead app, fans can access Cuphead face filters. The toys are all packaged in a unique printed bag decorated with characters from the game.
The collaboration celebrates the highly acclaimed Cuphead game that has sold over 6 million units worldwide and won over 20 major awards. It was previously announced Netflix would release a family-friendly animated adaptation called The Cuphead Show! sometime in 2021.
Cuphead is a classic run-and-gun game with a focus on giant boss battles. The graphics were inspired by the artwork of the 1930s and made to look as similar as possible, complete with hand-drawn cel animations, watercolor backgrounds, and a jazz soundtrack.
In Cuphead, players control either Cuphead or Mugman, or both in co-op, and travel through diverse worlds to repay their debt to the devil. Along the way, the characters will obtain new weapons, learn powerful moves, and uncover other hidden secrets.
The developer announced the DLC Cuphead – The Delicious Last Course would be coming sometime in 2020, but the exact release date is still unknown. The DLC add-on brings a new island, an unlockable playable character named Ms. Chalace, and more weapons and charms to help along the journey. Once Ms. Chalice is acquired, players can play the full adventure as the new character. The DLC is the “final challenging quest” in the game.
While players may be waiting for the final DLC, they can experience the Arby’s collaboration now. The collaboration has already been announced on both Studio MDHR and Arby’s social media accounts with previews of the toys included in Kids Meals.
King Features’ director of licensing, Christina Nix Lynch, commented about the collaboration, stating:
Cuphead’s momentum has been unstoppable since its launch, and this partnership further solidifies the hit gaming property as a cultural phenomenon. We are thrilled to bring Cuphead toys to Arby’s Kids Meals across North America, providing fans with new ways to engage in gameplay and create their own Inkwell Isle adventures.
The Cuphead and Arby’s collaboration is currently ongoing for approximately 12 weeks or until around the end of the year.
