Every couple of weeks or so, PC users can look forward to free offerings on the Epic Games Store. This week is no different. Now up until April 9, gamers will be able to pick up the exploration game Gone Home free of charge on this platform. It’s an investigative game that is definitely worth adding to the collection before time expires on the Epic Games Store.
Right away, it’s worth bringing up the visuals in Gone Home. The Fullbright Company did a good job at giving this game a unique personality filled with mystery and intricate details. The game takes place in a family home and despite this being the primary setting, there is plenty of variety in all of the rooms. You’ll move from one area to the next wondering what exactly happened.
The story also is alluring. You’ve just returned home after being away for a year abroad. What was supposed to be a welcome home celebration quickly descends into an unsettling task of finding out what happened to your family. They’re no one to be found. Could something have happened to them? Did they go back to see you abroad? That’s what you’ll get to find out in this compelling narrative/exploration experience.
The people responsible for the BioShock writing have worked on this game’s story, which is clear with the amount of detail and emotion you find throughout every discovery. Heartbreak, change, and love are all themes broached beautifully in this game and they definitely make you feel from beginning to end.
As mentioned earlier, you’ll spend a lot of your time exploring every nook and cranny in this house for clues. That includes drawers in desks, closets, underneath beds, and personal notes left behind. Slowly through your progression, you’ll begin putting together the pieces of what really happened. You’ll also learn more about each family member. That’s where the storytelling elements really shine bright. You have in-depth backstories to really help you fall in love with the characters, even though you’ve never met them before.
Gone Home also is full of plot twists that you won’t see coming. They certainly keep you on edge and engaged in every clue that you come across. It’s not often that a game like this comes around, so when it does, it’s a must-play experience. For absolutely nothing, you can enjoy Gone Home and go on an emotional roller coaster ride of family motifs.
