Freedom Fighters is a classic third-person shooter that hit the gaming scene back in 2003. It was developed by IO Interactive and features a unique concept where the Soviet Unit invaded New York city.

Unfortunately, the developer never followed it up with a sequel. That’s a shame too because this shooter showed a lot of potential. Fortunately, it looks like the game is not being forgotten.

It’s actually available right now on PC through the GOG store and also is discounted by 34%. So if you want to go back to a classic or perhaps experience it for the first time, you can do so right now at your leisure.

It has been quite some time since Freedom Fighters has come up by the developer, but this original version showing up on GOG could be a sign of things to come.

IO Interactive is currently hard at work on Hitman 3. They’ve done a fabulous job re-inventing this stealth-based series. It stands to reason that they could do the exact same with the original Freedom Fighters.

If the original receives a lot of attention, then we could very well see a reboot and even multiple games in the series. There are no official reports of such things at the moment, but it doesn’t hurt to dream.

And if you haven’t had the chance to play the original Freedom Fighters on PC, now’s a good time. As mentioned before, it features an alternative history where the Soviet Union successfully bombed Berlin and proceeded to take over the world.

You get to play as Chris Stone, a plumber by trade that has to rise to new heights as a military leader. It’s a tough ask, but Stone seems to have the disposition for this impossible task.

You’ll move throughout the campaign as Stone collecting weapons, finding supplies, and growing a resistance. The conflicts play out in a strategic manner and every battle has an impact on the next. Thus, every encounter has a lot of weight that draws you in time and time again.

Even though this is a shooter from 2003, it still has a lot of great elements that are worth revisiting after all of this time. This is a digital release and seems like a great offering considering its low price point.

And if the game does well on the GOG platform, who knows where the series will end up? Time will tell.
