The trailer for Killer Inn, the brand-new game, just went out-and… reactions were varied. Really varied. The game describes itself as a “deadly co-op survival experience where some players are secretly betraying the others.” Sounds fun, eh? Some disagree.

That official Square Enix tweet was really in keeping with someone trying to capture that eerie classic survival tension; however, instead of hype, the reply section became a gaggle of complaints. The gamers are outraged. Deeply outraged. Yet, it is not about Killer Inn but about what Square Enix is NOT doing.

Player @CiroErrico2 stated very plainly, “Where are FF IX Remake, FF VII Remake part 3, new NieR game, Chrono Trigger Remake, Kingdom Hearts IV and Dragon Quest XII?” Ouch! That pretty much means a shortlist of unannounced titles. Others followed suit with similar statements; @heartsleess135 remarked Square Enix probably “simply don’t want to listen to your fans.”

The Kingdom Hearts bunch seem pretty torn up about the whole thing. The cancelled Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link mobile game comes up in the replies several times, @YannGoff97572 lamenting, “waiting 3 years like an idiot for more leaks on KH4.” That stings.

Another complaint arose with the language barriers. @nebuxtv said no support for Spanish, whereas @Lycaon_Carpum went off on Final Fantasy Tactics not getting a proper Spanish localization. Their tweet (translated) says: “They spend money and development time on THIS? For projects nobody asked for?” Yikes.

Some liked it. @CastleMadnessDv said simply: “Looking good,” whereas @FFxZanarkand seemed outright excited: “This! 💜”. But these few voices were drowned out entirely by the vast ocean of negative comments about what Square Enix SHOULD be working on.

Then things got… weird. @Lu1948678046025 and @CGabel26771 exchanged insults calling each other “Anti semite” and “Religion is trash” respectively. Meanwhile, @Princess_Gaelic was telling someone to stop acting like a “sensitive snowflake” about Pride Month. Just your typical Twitter.

Essentially what has been said is that Square Enix is ignoring the projects players care about in favor of projects that no one really cares about, like Killer Inn. To put it in @redzakku’s words: “They said they’d learned their lesson and leave the slop to focus on what matters.” Ouch.

Square Enix has yet to respond to the backlash. Killer Inn looks to be a nice multiplayer outing for social deduction game aficionados. However, the present discourse has very little to do with the game and more to do with what Square Enix isn’t creating instead.

Is this going to hurt the success of Killer Inn? Probably not. Angry gamers will likely check it out while waiting for their Kingdom Hearts or Final Fantasy fix. But it’s definitely clear Square Enix needs to rebuild some trust amongst the community; maybe next time they should start with a Kingdom Hearts trailer, yeah?
