The Sonic Adventure series was incredibly popular when it released on the SEGA Dreamcast system. It revitalized the Sonic franchise, injecting it with 3D environments, voice acting, and actual story elements that fans went nuts for.

That excitement only grew in Sonic Adventure 2, when you were able to choose between two distinct stories, playing as the heroes Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, or as the villains, Eggman, Rouge, and fan favorite Shadow The Hedgehog.

However, the Dreamcast was incredibly short lived and we never got Sonic Adventure 3. Of course, other 3D Sonic games have been released since then, but none of them captured the magic of those original two.

The gaming industry loves a comeback. Just look at Crash Bandicoot 4, Tony Hawk, and Final Fantasy VII Remake making huge splashes on the gaming world. We love to see dormant franchises resurge and recapture our imagination.

And now SEGA is teasing that it might be ready to move on Sonic Adventure 3.

Next year, Sonic The Hedgehog turns 30, and SEGA has promised us some big surprises and new games. It will also mark 20 years since the release of Sonic Adventure 2. And SEGA ignited the imaginations of fans around the world with a special teaser on the official Sonic The Hedgehog Twitter account.

“Mathematically speaking, Sonic is aesthetically pleasing,” the company said in the tweet, which showed off a picture of Super Sonic from the original Sonic Adventure. But, if you look close, there seems to be a hidden message in the image.

On the side of Sonic’s face there appears to be the number three.

As if our collective brains didn’t melt enough at that reveal, voice actor Mike Pollock, who provided the voice for Sonic’s villain Dr. Eggman in both Sonic Adventures, tweeted out his own tease.

He tweeted out a video of the School House Rock song “3 Is a Magic Number.”

If I may quote his character in Sonic Adventure…

“No way! I can’t believe this!”

The timing seems to be right for a major return to the world of Sonic Adventure. This would surely make a huge impact on the Sonic fanbase in a way not seen since the release of the Sonic The Hedgehog movie, which starred Jim Carrey and was way better than it had any business being.

Of course, there is no longer a SEGA console to carry the title, so as we’ve seen in recent years, we would likely get at the very least a Nintendo Switch release with possible PlayStation and Xbox versions as well.
