Alright pirates, gather around! Rare has released the second season of Twitch drops for Sea of Thieves, and reactions seem to be all over the place. Really all over the place. The rewards include Renown, gold, Pirate Emporium cosmetics drop, etc., all until May 30th, at 10 AM UTC. You basically get to sit back and watch any Sea of Thieves stream for a cumulative six hours and the loot drops for you. Sounds easy enough, doesn’t it? Everyone seems satisfied, but there are some who really aren’t.
What is good about this is that some people are excited. The Amethyst Mercenary Hat was called “fresh,” and someone went on record thanking Rare “finally giving us good Twitch Drops instead of weapons and ship parts with slightly different wood color.” So, yeah; a reskin has been a touchy topic all this while. But then… oh boy, ocean waves of complaints began.
The biggest complaint was effort. Or rather, it is the lack of effort. Many players have condemned Rare for recycling old cosmetics, with one user having the lack of shame to simply say, “That flag is so low effort.” Another was just wild with indignation: “Drops used to be full ship sets or pets; now? Same drops or recolors.” Ouch. Some have even gone so far as to speculate that Rare has put Everwild on the front burner at the expense of Sea of Thieves. Double ouch.”
Then comes the time commitment. Six hours might not sound like much for some, but for those working 60-hour weeks? No chance! Another player vented, “Sure do love working 60+ hours a week and having no time to get Twitch Drops.” The answers? Classic gamer fixes: “Leave it open in the background with the tab muted while you sleep” or “Just let it play while you sleep.” Practical, eh? Sad, eh?
And now we have the whole-themed cosmetics argument. One person asked, “Why have we moved away from themed cosmetics?” while another reminisced about how drops were once part of a set that was worth collecting; now, it’s a random free-for-all of reskins-and-not-everyone-is-here-for-it.
But hope is not gone: some very loud voices are still singing the praises of the Gilded Phoenix Jacket (someone really needs to have this) and the return of the Twilight Hunter flag. Hey, free stuff is free stuff, right? At least for the most part, even if it’s one level of Renown that one player even helps themselves by saying can be earned quicker by “Sailing to an inactive fort and grabbing all the kegs.”
So, what’s the governing fact? If collecting cosmetics—even if just reskins—is somewhere near your heart, maybe these drops are worth a background tab or two. But if you were hoping for something really new? Temper your expectations. Either way, dropped and ticking the clock, and the Sea of Thieves community remains loud and appreciative.
Excuse me now while I AFK a Twitch stream. Happy sailing, pirates. Or uh… Happy watching? Whatever. Go grab your loot.
