The big bomb for Overwatch 2 is dropped by Blizzard Entertainment—map voting is officially here! Season 17: Powered Up! comes in with the brand-new system that allows gamers to pick where they want to brawl. No more staying stuck in New Junk City for the tenth time for most people (well, unless, you know, people decide to vote it). But expect the world to go crazy… it’s a bit too much.

We must get down to the nitty-gritty first and explain what map voting really entails. Instead of the game just blind-randomizing a map, players get to specify which of two options they want to play on before the match actually begins. Is it simple? Well, apparently, not everyone is bliss. Some are already crying for the maps that will probably no longer ever see the light of day. Somebody tweeted, “Rip to the maps we’ll never see again,” while another simply stated, “No more New Junk City.” Oof.

Others, in turn, see rays of hope. A large player block is feeling great about the decision, mostly because they’re tired of Push and Flashpoint maps. The other called Flashpoint a “walking simulator,” which—I suppose—does make sense. Others are just happy at the thought of actually having a choice in their matches, however small, even if it’s just in Quick Play. One gamer noted, “Makes no sense that only sweaty players get to enjoy this feature,” referring to current hero bans in Competitive.

Without fail, there will be that one guy shouting to bring back 2CP. We see you. Respect for dedication there. But really, most of us are still traumatized after the second point on Hanamura.

That said, map voting will induce some… monotonous gameplay. What if everybody selects the same three maps for the whole day and night? “Se jugarán los mismos 3 mapas,” joked one player (which translates to “The same 3 maps will get played”). And they do have a point. Remember when Dust 2 was spammed by everyone and their mother in CS:GO? Yeah. That.

Aside from this voting rigmarole, Season 17 also brought at least one Bastion buff (at last) and a good amount of other tweaks. But let’s be real: no one is talking about that. It’s been all about the maps, the Switch 2 ones begging for upgrades, and the Kiriko mains still waiting on that Donut Delivery bugfix (which really, Blizzard, really needs to be fixed after a couple of months).

So what’s the verdict? Map voting being such a big change, just like all other big changes in Overwatch, has people screaming in all directions. Some love it; others hate it. Some are here just for the drama anyway, so at least that much will keep everyone from having to deal so often with Push maps. Probably. Maybe.

All we can say for sure is that Season 17 is going to be a hell of a ride. Excuse me while I get back to voting against some maps!
