NBA 2K21 Producer Describes How The Developers Decide A Rookie’s Overall Rating

This year’s NBA draft, which was delayed by several months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is now behind us, and 2K Sports have updated NBA 2K21‘s rosters to reflect each team’s draft picks.

Given that the new roster additions are rookies, the developers don’t really have a track record to go on, as it’s still unknown how this year’s rookie class will fare when the NBA’s regular season begins next month, and during a recent interview with Hoops Hype, 2K producer Mike Stauffer explained how they decide an overall rating for the game’s newly added rookies.

“Every rating is a projection and when there is less sample size, it is going to be trickier to nail those projections,” said Stauffer. “Even general managers and coaches have trouble figuring out who the best player to take is when it comes to the draft.

“During a year like this one, where the sample size is smaller, there is going to be a lot more variability and it is going to be tougher for the statistics to show the full picture. We are trying to make the ratings as accurate as possible without having the full picture like we usually do.”

2. James Wiseman – Glass Cleaner – 77 overall.
3. LaMelo Ball – Playmaker – 77 overall.
4. Onyeka Okongwu – Finisher – 76 overall.
5. Obi Toppin – Interior Finisher – 76 overall.
6. Patrick Williams – Shot Creator – 75 overall.
7. Isaac Okoro – Floor-Spacing Slasher – 75 overall.
8. Deni Avdija – Three-Level-Scorer – 75 overall.
9. Killian Hayes – Playmaker – 74 overall.
10. Devin Vassell – 3-Point Specialist – 74 overall.
11. Tyrese Haliburton – Offense Initiator – 74 overall.
