And Marvel Rivals players are having their heinies kicked as they try to get the first genuine view of Ultron Competitive skin for Season 2.5. Well, not all positive reactions came forth. There were opinions flying in all directions about this one: love, hatred, and utter frustration due to design choices.
First of all, the skin really looks like a recolor of the default-lining Ultron skin with some brown accents thrown in there that make no sense to any player. AngelOfDeathGripsYAH even asked, “What vibe is this supposed to evoke? Leather? Wood? Chocolate? Rust?” Seriously, what would anyone think? Those brown accents are extremely unbecoming if paired with other gold-tier skins in the game.
And we go further to talk about VFX—or the lack of it. Multiple players have talked on how Marvel Rivals usually gives higher-tier skins some special VFX or sound changes. But this one? Nada. “It’s blue rarity. The bots don’t change for blue rarity,” one user almost gloriously added to the acquired anger. Another user, wijbol, went on an epic rant calling the skipping of VFX updates even for some legendary skins in the game “lazy” design.
Some don’t mind it, though. Some players are even glad that there wasn’t a big grind for it. One said, “At least it wasn’t a grind lmao,” and another confessed that they only ranked so they could get the skin and then dipped as soon as possible. The truth is, getting to Gold rank isn’t all that sweaty, so the skin being easy enough to get might be the only saving grace.
Appreciating the bigger picture though, it’s all about skin quality in Marvel Rivals. There are clear expectations of the players for competitive rewards, especially when other games are forcing everything they can into flashy, animated ranked skins (just to name one, Overwatch). If Marvel Rivals really hopes to keep engagement alive beyond introductory periods, definitely it’s a must to either improve those cosmetics or just keep off those mystery brown patches.
Until the time this happens, the Ultron skin will just stay as it is: Semi-glamorous Gold reward. Whether it’s enough to push people into grinding ranked remains to be seen. But hey, at least it’s not another charm or emoji!
