PlayStation 4 owners can now purchase the base game for $19.99. Dynasty Warriors 9 was initially released on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in February 2018. The game had a mixed reputation on all releases, including expensive Season Passes. The game was inspired by the Romance of the Three Kingdoms saga but introduced new features. The game introduced an open world that players could explore on foot or on horseback. Dynasty Warriors 9 also introduced several new characters from history into the game. The roster was the largest in the series so far. There are 83 officers returning from previous games and seven newcomers from all kingdoms (Cao Xiu, Man Chong, Xun You, Cheng Pu, Xu Sheng, Zhou Cang, and Xin Xianying) for a total of 90 playable characters. The strategy focused title Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV, which was released this year, also had the largest roster in its series. The title is now more accessible to players than before, with a lower-cost alternative to purchasing the full game and multiple DLC. Players interested in playing the game before making the investment can download a free trial now. Dynasty Warriors 9 is still receiving occasional new updates. Some include new content, such as the "Brynhildr" and "Hyperion" mounts and new weapons. In February, there was an update to add background music from previous titles in the series.
