The wait is almost over for Huntdown fans. Easy Trigger Games just dropped a gameplay deep dive for Huntdown: Overtime that’s got everyone talking. The video shows off the roguelite prequel’s cybernetic upgrade system and that signature grindhouse combat we love. But here’s the kicker – we’re getting the Early Access release date tomorrow at the Galaxies showcase.

The footage shows everything fans hoped for and more.

The video gives us our best look yet at how the roguelite mechanics work. You play as bounty hunter John Sawyer before he became the legend from the first game. Every run teaches you something new about the combat system. The cybernetic upgrades look brutal in the best way possible.

What really stands out is how they’ve kept that 80s cyberpunk vibe while adding fresh mechanics. The pixel art still pops off the screen. The soundtrack hits just right. It feels like Huntdown but with enough new ideas to justify its existence.

Of course, some players are wondering if we really needed a prequel. Prequels can be tricky – we already know where John Sawyer’s story goes. The challenge is making that journey feel meaningful when you know the destination.

Roguelites also aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. Some fans loved Huntdown’s carefully crafted levels and might not want the randomized approach. The original game was all about tight level design and memorable boss fights. Can a roguelite capture that same magic?

The bigger question is whether this prequel can stand on its own. Huntdown was special because it nailed the 80s action movie aesthetic perfectly. It felt like playing through a lost Stallone flick. The game had personality that went way beyond just good pixel art.

What’s cool about this approach is how it reframes the original game. John Sawyer was already a badass when we met him in Huntdown. Now we get to see how he became that way. There’s something satisfying about playing through someone’s origin story when you already know how legendary they become.

The roguelite elements could actually work really well here. Each run represents another step in Sawyer’s transformation. Every death and upgrade brings him closer to the unstoppable force we know from the first game. That’s smart storytelling through gameplay mechanics.

Easy Trigger Games earned a lot of trust with the original Huntdown. That game flew under the radar for some people, but anyone who played it knows how special it was. The combat felt weighty. The world felt lived-in. The bosses were memorable without being unfair.

Coffee Stain Publishing is backing this one too, which is a good sign. They’ve got a solid track record with indie games that have personality.

Tomorrow’s Galaxies showcase is happening at 8pm GMT (that’s 4pm EST for US fans). We’ll finally get that Early Access release date everyone’s been waiting for. The timing suggests it might be sooner than expected – why else would they be building this much hype?

You can catch the showcase on Twitch or YouTube. The Steam page is already live if you want to wishlist it. There’s also a Discord community that’s been pretty active leading up to this announcement.

The original Huntdown proved that pixel art games could still feel fresh in 2019. Huntdown: Overtime has the chance to do the same for roguelites in 2026. Based on what we’ve seen so far, Easy Trigger Games understands what made the first game special.

We’ll know a lot more after tomorrow’s showcase. But right now, Huntdown: Overtime is looking like it could be the prequel fans actually wanted.
