It is said Rockstar scuttled GTA 6 before it could rip. At least, so said leaker Fravilys. The rumor goes that the original story was cancelled all the way back in 2016 for being too dark, which is ironic, because… it’s GTA. Since when did the franchise ever shun anything too dark, for a game series where you mow with a minigun down crowds of civilians while on virtual drugs?
The leaked story sounds like the basic premise of a crime drama pushed too far through the binge-watch treatment. The three protagonists; a corrupt cop, whose son is a drug addict, and the Colombian drug lord’s right-hand man. That’s too much dysfunction under one roof! Just imagine the turmoil, the betrayals, and the downright messiness-anyway, Rockstar apparently looked at this masterpiece of mayhem and went, “No, let’s tone it down.”
Of course, gamers remain split on it. Some have, like hunterkiller185, outright denied it (“y’all really need to stop believing leakers”). Whereas GanaManaRegen stated that “GTA IV was already very dark and maybe had one of the best stories in the series, so why shy away now?” Then, XBorgHQ chimed, trying to find the dark with a side-eye emoji.
Thing is, Rockstar hasn’t talked. Not about the scrapped story, not about the leaker’s credibility, nothing. And seriously, GTA 6 gossip has been around for years, with about as much consistency as a toddler’s bedtime routine. Remember when they swore it was based in Vice City? Or that it was coming out in 2023? Yeah.
Still, a dark and gritty GTA isn’t really so far from the realms of possibility. GTA 4 definitely leaned harder into that noir vibe, and neither was ReD so very much sunshine and rainbows to begin with. But, as usual, Rockstar didn’t say one way or the other about whether this scrapped story was real or just another internet tall tale.
There are, as always, the usual suspects, with PepeGoesCrypto pleading for even more edge to the series while people like techiesnft are more sarcastic: they’d rather not have it at all if it’s “PG-12.” And honestly? Huge mood. That’s meant to be what sets GTA apart: unapologetic chaos. So if Rockstar really is dialing it down, well… that’s alarming.
For now, we’ll simply have to wait and watch. Rockstar are probably cooking some insane sht for GTA 6, either scrapped storyline or not. But until an official trailer or statement drops, my advice would be to treat the leaks as anything but gospel.
And in the event that it does come out softened much more than it ever should have been, at least mods will keep the madness alive. Just putting it out there.
