Sucker Punch Productions‘ third-person open-world title, Ghost of Tsushima, has sold over five million copies in just over four months, making it the fastest-selling PlayStation 4 original title.

While Sony expected Ghost of Tsushima to do well, company CEO Jim Ryan told Games Industry that the game has exceeded their expectations to a degree that they didn’t expect.

“But let’s talk about Ghost of Tsushima, which has been a delight on the part of the critics and, without a doubt, a delight on the side. commercial; to a degree we did not expect. That says a lot about the work Sucker Punch has done to build on their previous canon of work.”

In addition to having one of the best single-player campaigns, Sucker Punch recently added the Legends multiplayer mode to Ghost of Tsushima, which features co-op story quests, a survival mode, and a four-player raid mode. Also, the multiplayer expansion has been a tremendous success, as the devs revealed that over 11 million missions have been played, 141 million Oni have been defeated, 22 million spirit dogs have been summoned, and 1.3 billion enemies have been defeated.

Given that Ghost of Tsushima exceeded expectations, it’s pretty safe to assume that a sequel is on the way at some point, and a recent job listing by Sucker Punch did, in fact, hint at a sequel, as the listing had the following requirements for applicants.

  • 1+ years’ experience as a game writer. Shipped titles and AAA open-world experience strongly preferred.
  • Excellent organizational skills. Able to produce quality writing under tight deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Deep understanding of open-world narrative design and the current generation of open-world games.
  • Strong skill collaborating with a creative team across many disciplines. Flexibility to collaborate remotely while working from home.
  • Experience receiving creative feedback on your work. Strong ability to absorb feedback and revise your writing in alignment with core design values.
  • Ability to self-critique and generate constructive feedback for other writers and designers.
  • Desire to write stories set in feudal Japan.

If Sucker Punch is going to develop a Ghost of Tsushima sequel, it’ll probably be set on Japan’s mainland, where Jin Sakai — The Ghost — will try to stop the Mongol invasion, which will likely be led by Kublai Khan. Of course, Kublai was mentioned several times during the first game, which is why it’s probably safe to assume that he’ll be the main villain in the rumored sequel.
