Ever since Nintendo shocked the gaming community with the promise of Donkey Kong Bananza being a July 17 launch title for Nintendo Switch 2, the community has gone berserk. From the trailer alone, for those that ever played a DK game with their dad, the entire family is going to have to put aside everything they know about Donkey Kong. Kongs are rock-surfing, smashing their way through the environment, and maybe they’re a hundred times more chaotic than a barrel factory-going-abra-kaboom.
The tweet from Nintendo America once showed Donkey Kong surfing on a boulder, opening a storm of reactions within the gaming community, with some in delirious excitement putting pen to paper for some entirely-made-up history, and others discussing the pricing policies of Nintendo. The entire civilization is screaming, with one player (@SpeederLight1) typing in all caps: “IM SO HYPED FOR THIS GAME.” Some wonder if this game’s announcement will be the dealbreaker for them to jump into buying a Switch 2 even before Smash Bros. arrives, such as @thegr8andreus.
Other people, however, did not want the game to dominate the airwaves. Some, such as @Subi_Dean, argued that this should have been the launch game for the Switch 2, instead of Mario Kart, calling all that open-world stuff “extremely boring.” Ouch. Then @LORD__HELIX waxed on about Nintendo bullying indie devs and deleting artists’ works. (We are pretty sure there is no way to explain how that connects with DK surfing, but hey, it is Twitter.)
Fashion critics released their verdict. @CanterChad wondered, “Since when does Donkey Kong wear what looks like overalls?” Uh, yeah, pretty valid question: When did DK get into construction? Meanwhile, @Play_Eternis threw some shade: “Try surfing through a Ragnar axe swing. Spoiler: You won’t.” Okay, now that’s just rude.
The price discussion started again. @matthewhenzel reminded that Nintendo first-party games hardly ever go on sale, so $70 for DK Bananza might be a hard pill to swallow for some, but when has that ever stopped Nintendo fans? @RstarThunder112 has already declared, “Day 1 buy,” and @grpotiongames confessed, “I’m pretty excited for this game, actually. It looks fun.”
And then the eternal question: Will there be Amiibo support? Yours truly, @JPipo86, is asking these hard-hitting questions. @bluelemonlake worries about battery life, as apparently, rock-surfing Kongs drain power faster than a smartphone in 5G.
One thing – does Nintendo know how to get a crowd talking? Is it the absurdity of DK’s new age extreme sport, or the great philosophical dilemma of shelling out seventy bucks for a game? On any occasion, DK Bananza could well be the Switch 2’s first major gamble. Will it work? Answers will come after July 17.
Meanwhile, don’t stop keeping your eyes peeled for possible news updates-and a little practice in rock-surfing. Just avoid the real thing!
