The new update by Sony brings the ability for PS5 players to link their Discord accounts for voice chat, and one of the few remaining systemic differences between console and PC users had finally been removed. Every new feature becomes yet another thing to be demanded from this new implementation. Literally, more.
What happened? Sony’s official PlayStation account @AskPlayStation tweeted a handy guide on linking your PSN account with Discord so that you can enter voice channels straight from your PS5 console. No more awkwardly switching devices or begging somebody to put their phone on speaker; instead, everyone just smooths their way into a group chat. Sounds good, doesn’t it?
Well… the players have their thoughts.
For one, it’s far from being perfectly integrated. Accounts linked keep getting randomly unlinked, said @RyS187 and @ErikInCt_, making the whole system pretty unreliable. Others are not really happy either: @SaddestYul says it’s gone from being annoying to utterly frustrating. Then the bigger issue pains: screen sharing. Or rather, the lack of it.
A massive number of responses were outright demands for the implementation of Discord streaming on PS5. @Unknown_Spot1 said, “the best feature ever,” while @edawgXVI just told everyone to “shut up and add screen sharing.” @Deadchamber19 also agreed that viewing screenshares would really take the integration to another level. And honestly? They’re not wrong.
What we currently have is very basic with voice chat, and that’s about it. No push-to-talk (thanks for that one, @Dukecitysole), no recording Discord audio in clips (goodbye lost moments, @AziliaTheGreat), and no official Discord app whatsoever (hitting you with that blame, @Dontmiindme1). It works, but set beside what PC users have, it’s… half-baked.
Still, some have gotten the feature to work. @Orion_Assante wrote about playing Helldivers 2 with cross-platform friends proving the feature really is useful when it works. But the bugs and missing features are so many that there’s still considerable work awaiting the developers at Sony and Discord.
And don’t even get me started on those random ones. Like when @ElderGodKi’s voice channel was suddenly renamed to “420 friendly gold climb.” No reason was given. Just vibes.
So yes, Discord on PS5 is here, and it is the start. But if Sony really wants to keep its player base smiling, then the development team better get serious about screen sharing, stability, and maybe even a full-fledged Discord app all by itself. Until then? Gamers will be yelling into the void (and into their headsets).
