Square Enix gave just another slice of info on the charming enemies that merely get in the way of the player in Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster, with all attention somewhere else in the game key card dance. The remastering of our darling JRPG is stirring up some drama, and not just about the battles of Luxendarc.

So, what do the voices say? Square Enix opted to bring out the game in physical form…kind of. Instead of a cartridge really, they chose to use a game key card—basically just a boxed download code. And the players? They have felt appropriately disgruntled. Complaints spurted in under Square’s tweet as one user, DDubgaming, said the dreaded words: “The game key card killed this. If you spent the alleged $15 on the cart instead of the alleged $4 on a game key card, you would’ve had way more buyers.” Ouch.

Akeru was intrigued. The drama was only starting. Several fans felt insulted beyond measure. Doctorworm623 threw another wrench into the gears with, “Square Enix clearly doesn’t love Bravely Default, since they decided to puke out a Game Key Card.” Ouch x 2. Even the die-hard fans of the series, Katakur4i, who just finished the original game, aren’t feeling good about this approach.

People who couldn’t care less about the drama are enamored by everything about the remasters: Nightalize shared happily, “I still need to get this eventually, it looks so cute😭😭,” and MikeusesAether was going down memory lane, shouting out some asterisk holders, including Holly and Barras.

Meanwhile, everyone here wants the ports. On the PlayStation side (Soera_Areos, we see you), the baton for carrying a port is loudly passed around: “Why hasn’t this game been made available for PlayStation?” Steam gamers? No less loud. Gamereminharola blatantly demanded, “Release it on Steam!”

Then this weirdly heated exchange between Jeffrey Epes and ConsoleCraz77 was about…something? Seriously, it got downright philosophical abruptly. Jeffrey expounded about “watching the things I love getting vandalized by elements of society that have historically caused misery in the world,” while ConsoleCraz77 tersely responded with, “Ok Jeffrey.”

Ah, and then there was another bomb from Kingdomeco75 requesting Kingdom Hearts 4. Sure, let’s toss that in too.

Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster should be an upbeat, starry-eyed celebration-an occasion to reacquaint oneself with a beloved classic in shiny new visuals. But with the game key card drama, platform wars, and the unprovoked existential rants, the discussion is just our messy mess.

Does Square Enix heed the backlash? Who knows. But, there is one thing: players want their carts loud and clear.
