Bungie’s latest dungeon, Ghosts of the Deep, had players scratching their heads—not just the mechanics but those weird symbols that one has to hang on to in memory. And so, true to its nature, the Destiny 2 community came up with some very unusual names for these Hive runes.

So what exactly is the situation here? The dungeon is such that during an encounter, players have to shout out these glowing signs. And rather than go vouch for some official names (should they exist), Guardians have just named them on whatever their appearance is. Now, some of those names, let’s just say, are quite “off the rails.”

Pizza, burger, table… okay, sure. Then it goes further into craziness with names like “Mr. Krabs suicide,” “Gollum,” and “booba.” That is correct. One player went as far as calling them “Tesla, burger king, burger, temple,” which sounds like the title of some delirious fever dream by now.

The responses to Bungie’s tweet where they asked the players what they called these symbols became a huge shot of chaos. Sometimes, some go simple: “V, X, O, A,” and then others get away from that: “Ice cream, bullet hole, burger, and hard to find” would probably sum it all up, especially considering a Guardian actually admitted the bottom-right symbol was really hard to locate during the actual encounter.

Then, there is the chaos of multilingualism. One player offered German labels: “Kreis” (circle) and “Eiffelturm mit Kriegsbemahlung” (Eiffel Tower with war paint), while another answered with the Spanish terms: “chincheta, asterisco, hamburguesa y medusa” (thumbtack, asterisk, hamburger, and jellyfish).

Well, a question really remains, though. Are those names really that pertinent? Well, in dungeons, where real action is set, communication is the key. If your fireteam is out there calling symbols “predator” and “carrot,” while you are calling the same ones “Vex head” and “stake,” the messiness will come so fast and so furious. Players openly admit that they are really making up these names on the spot almost every time, and… honestly, so do I.

Another thing is some of the interesting squabbles that arise amongst the missed opportunity of old dungeon armor because one was either too young or shy to LFG back then. “Can you at least add a way to obtain these armors?” one player begged. Bungie, you there?

The grind for dungeons, however one wants to call these symbols, “pizza and fox” or “half-div and lips,” will be forever devoid of any consensus from Destiny players. And honestly? That’s half the fun of it.

So, while you are deep-diving into the Ghosts of the Deep, remember that your fireteam’s names for the runes might be terrible; as long as all of you abide by that terrible name—or even think you do—you’re fine. Probably. Maybe.

Or just wipe. That works too.
