If ever there was an event to ignite community passion, Bungie’s very recent teaser for Destiny 2 did just that. The official Destiny account posted something cryptic asking the Guardians to pick a number from 1 to 29 for a “boon from the Nether,” stirring excitement, skepticism, and some downright disgust.

An ominous, shadowy image tagged along with the post (Nether-related, maybe not so much), prodding the community into commenting with their numbers so that the game might bestow a mysterious scantling of some sort. Wherein, the erratic replies gave good day to some earnest pursuit of combinations: 17, for instance, was put forward by a user in the name of his late grandmother (R.I.P.), while others chose to rant about server issues, pricing, and Bungie-related controversies.

Classic Destiny community moment.

Then Bungie leapt out of the shadows to offer some lore-laden, personalized destinies to a handful of responses: the number 21 was destined for drowning in special ammo, while 7 revealed new armor, new you, and the true endgame: Dresstiny. Because fashion is the real grind, after all.

Well, quite a few did not seem to take the bait. Some were just fierce complaints about the Phishing issues from the Aussie servers (Bungie, fix your stuff), and then there was that whole sire of $99 Final Shape expansion drama declaring Destiny 2 dead. Oof.

And then we had the…interesting ones. One Guardian demanded changes to body types (valid), another ranted about Truth in Gambit (also valid), while a couple basically said, “Bungie, fix the bugs before Number Games.” Can’t argue with that.

So what are Nether boons, really? Not a clue. They could be a salute to whatever event is being set up, a secret quest, or an open joke at the community’s expense by Bungie. Maybe they’re cover-ups for the fact that some players still can’t get inside at the moment. Can’t say.

Would like to annoy me? Pick a number, and then embrace your Guardian’s destiny in misery. Don’t expect anyone to be in a happy state, though.

And for one, this just proved that destiny players never fail to be personable, passionate, and into everything: lore, loot, or even a place to throw some sort of butt.

Until next time, Guardians. May you be blessed with many boons and only a handful of error codes.
