Much to everyone’s chagrin, it was recently revealed that Cyberpunk 2077 has been delayed again, as it’s now currently scheduled to be released in December. Unfortunately, though, it doesn’t look like developer CD Projekt Red is 100% certain that the game won’t be delayed again.
While speaking during a recent conference call, CD Projekt Red CEO Adam Kiciński said that he’s not comfortable with the game’s new release date, but he is confident that they’ll probably have it ready to go for its December 10 launch date.
“We feel — maybe not comfortable, but confident [in the new release date],” said CD Projekt Red’s CEO during the aforementioned conference call with investors.
Also during the conference call, Adam Kiciński confirmed the speculation that the game is being delayed due to its issues while running on current-gen consoles, saying that Cyberpunk 2077 is ready for PC and that it runs great on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, but it has a few issues on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
“The game is ready for the PC and runs great on the next-gen consoles, and could be shipped on the scheduled date on those platforms. However, even though the game has been certified on the current gens by both Sony and Microsoft, some very final optimisation processes for such a massive and complex game require a bit of additional time.
“We are releasing a game which is, to be honest, a next-gen game, and we’re preparing it for fairly old machines, which poses certain unique challenges.”
Another reason for the delay was mentioned during the conference call, as CDPR’s CEO said that they want to ensure that Cyberpunk 2077 gets a 90+ rating on Metacritic. Their most recent AAA release, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, got a 90+ rating for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, but the Switch version, which released last year, received an 85.
Prior to the delay, CD Projekt Red said that Cyberpunk 2077 will be better than The Witcher 3 in every way, which is a pretty bold statement given that their previous release is widely considered to be the best open-world RPG of the current generation.
As of this writing, CD Projekt Red hasn’t revealed the release date for Cyberpunk 2077 on next-gen consoles, but it is supposed to be released for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox One X sometime next year. Also, the developers haven’t given much of an update regarding the game’s multiplayer, but they have said that it won’t be added until sometime in 2022.
