Square Enix just released another dollop of eye candy of Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster, flaunting what they considered a variety of beautiful locations that the player will get to traverse in the RPG almost immediately. The conversation quickly turned into complaints about a missing physical release.
The Square Enix tweet shows some of the best scenery from the game: rich forests and castles married between medieval and fantasy, all remastered in HD for the current generation of platforms. The reactions? Merely awe and frustration. Players begin speaking shamelessly about the game, such as the ever-ebullient Noah McCay: “from everything I could see, it’s absolutely amazing.” And then there’s Eleanor Komatsu: “I can’t wait to stream this to full capacity.” Followed by several sparkle emojis all in caps.
Now, another big shift is taking place. Most of the replies are basically some great crowds of outright fury over the physical release or lack of it. Instead of usual cartridge or disc, Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster is being sold in certain areas as a game key card-and again, the gamers are not having it.
“Game key card equals no buy,” says Keiichi Morisato, a sentiment echoed by countless others. Dr. Worm says that they’d pay extra for a true physical Switch release but won’t back the format. Chantal pleads with Square Enix to reconsider: “Please make a physical version… it would be an instant buy if physical.”
And this isn’t just about key cards. Complaints about censorship are pouring in. Felipe Martinez states bluntly: “It’s full of censorship, spare me.” Zynos demands Square Enix “remove censorship” and calls it unnecessary in 2025. king_goomba even claims the game is “flopping” because of these decisions.
Next, debates over platforms. PlatinumRyzz, among many others, is upset at the lack of PlayStation. Bueno rhetorically asks why it’s a Switch 2 exclusive, labeling it a nonsensical decision. Meanwhile, Thiago Julião Paiva looks for Brazilian Portuguese localization as Sanctus_ demands Spanish subs for Tactics Ogre, somehow dragging that into the mess.
In all the chaos, some positives find their way out. LorcanaRealm calls it one of their “favorite games now.” Cilantro politely asks for some good shots of the locations to use for wallpapers. But mostly? It is a river of frustration.
What do we conclude? Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster looks incredibly pretty. But the key card issue, the censorship argument, and platform debates on the other hand might bring Square Enix into a full-fledged PR disaster. Will they actually do anything about it? Only time will tell. For now, the players are split between some willing to just jump in and some refusing to even look at it with a ten-foot pole.
And basically, that is gaming discourse in 2025. Pretty visuals but a messy rollout. Some things will never change.
